The Vandesande family of Antigonish, NS took part in their very first show recently. Congratulations to the kids as the calves looked well prepared. 5 open heifers and a bull were purchased from us in 2013 and these calves are some of the first offspring. Continue reading ...

Champion was shown by Caitlin Brake and Reserve by Dallas Hunter. J and J McAfee exhibited three steers (including reserve champion charolais) sired by a Worth-a-Bit Angus bull.
Good Luck to all exhibitors at this years event. Stay safe in the raging blizzard! 5 of the 50+ entries carry our breeding so stay tuned for how they did. This is the 2013 Champion 4-H steer who was bred by us.
With three cows left to calve, we are at 68% heifers in the crossbreds and 56% in the purebreds for an overall average of 62%. Guess it is a good time to expand the herd!

We hope everyone had a great Christmas and are hoping for a prosperous 2014.
2013 ended with some terrible weather conditions here. We averaged a storm every 2.5 days and have more snow than we had all last winter, in fact this was the first white Christmas in 10 years. There is a lot of snow on the rooves, some buildings have been lost. We are now in a cold snap with -34 wind chill tonight so we just can't seem to get a break.
Trevor Welch, Mack Dixon, Jim and Hilda Colodey and myself recently traveled to Calgary, Alberta to take in the grand opening of the Canadian Angus Association new building. It is a beautiful facility that all members should be proud of.

Harvest has been a challenge this year. It started in early August with the barley but breakdowns lengthened that process. Just as we got the oats started, rain fell for two weeks! All in all the yields were good with barley testing at 46 lbs/bu and 1.2 tonnes/acre. Oats was 37lbs/bu and 1.5 tonnes/ac.
This heifer just keeps getting better every day and we have decided to enter her in the Angus in Action Sale on October 26th as well. She is sired by the well known club calf bull Eye Candy and out of a very powerful Angus cow (pictured below)

We weaned our bull calves and some steers this week using these nose flaps called "Quiet Wean". The procedure is you put the rings in, leave with the cows for 3-5 days then take the calves away. Stress is greatly reduced as the bond between the pair has time to break. Bawling is almost completely reduced and so far we are satisfied with the results. Below is the information on the bull calves.

There are Eye Candy, Mercedes Benz, and Stocker sired crossbred calves and a Soo Line Kodiak 9194 purebred bull calf and a Red Six Mile Sakic purebred red bull calf. We have also had the first calf out of our latest herdsire Chico Xplosive 8x.

Friday night I attended the "Beef n" Blues" event which was part of the month long PEI Fall Flavors festival here on Prince Edward Island. It was a sold out event held in Summerside and was a tremendous success.
Local chefs such as Ross Munroe of Sims Steakhouse and celebrity chefs such as Mark MacEwan from Top Chef Canada prepared their favorite beef dishes at various stations throughout the room using product from Atlantic Beef Products. Meanwhile we were entertained with great blues music ... Continue reading ...
After one of the coldest and wettest July's on record, the weather finally turned in August and we were able to catch up here on the farm. First cut was finally finished the second week of the month (latest ever) and we have a little second cut to complete this week. The organic spelt destined for Speerville flour mill was harvested on the 19th and we started the barley and straw on the 27th only to have Hurricane Irene arrive today with her heavy rain and wind putting a halt to combining for... I just came back from dropping off an hamburger and asparagus order at the Lobster Barn in Victoria. We appreciate the local businesses that support us and I encourage you to visit them for a meal this summer.
Here is a great article from the good food revolution blog highlighting the great taste of PEI beef. We have had the pleasure of giving numerous tours to clients of Atlantic Beef Products over the last couple of years. It is a terrific opportunity to tell our story of environmentally friendly and low stress production to a consumer who is looking for more information about the food we produce and they consume.
Yesterday we planted some asparagus crowns. Since we have a small acreage we do it all by hand. With the help of some neighbors (Alex and Tessa Craig) we had planted 1000 plants in under two hours. For those of you who are not familiar with asparagus, the material you plant are called crowns, a root mass that resembles spiders, for lack of a better term. It will be 2013 before these plants will be ready for harvest. Asparagus is a perennial crop and must be allowed to get established and build... Continue reading ...
Good luck to all the junior exhibitors at the Maritime Angus Field Day and Junior show tomorrow in Port Elgin, NB. It is being hosted by the Booth and Oulton families and many thanks to them. There are many sponsors that help to make this event an annual success. All the semen that is sold after the show has been graciously donated from across the country and all proceeds go to the juniors.
May seemed to go by so fast. It must have been all the time I spent looking out the window at all the rain! Last week the sun came out, the ground dried and I finally took off my touque. Barley and oats were put in last week and the soybeans will go in the ground this week.

Here are a few new pictures of some of our 2011 calves
This is an Eye Candy out of a purebred angus cow.
Eye Candy heifer out of a Limo x cow
Eye Candy steer by an angus x cow
Red SVR Gangster heifer calf out of a Bush's Grand Design cow. For some reason the purebred calves won't stand for pictures but I'll get them eventually!!
Congratulations to all exhibitors at the 60th annual PEI Easter Beef Show and Sale and thank you to all the purchasers of steers in today's sale. Special congratulations to Ian and Austin Drake of Vernon Bridge for placing 1st in the Angus class with a steer sired by Worth-a-Bit Alliance and then taking reserve champion Angus overall.
AI breeding is in full swing now. So far cows have been bred to the club calf bulls Eye Candy and Mercedes Benz and angus bulls Old Post and Eastondale Breakaway. Heifers have been bred to Mercedes Benz and angus bulls Soo line Kodiak 9194 and Connealy Thunder.
The bulls were weighed, examined by the vet and Igenity test sampled today. The new weights are posted on the "bulls for sale" page and they are for sale anytime.
Calving is winding down here with a 100% calving rate so far. Only a few more to come in the next month or so. We started breeding for next year today with 3 cows bred AI.

All we do these days is move snow. It is piling up everywhere and soon there will be no where to put it. As I write this another storm is blowing, fortunately it has turned to rain but more white stuff is scheduled tomorrow.

The bulls that are for sale on this site were weighed today and the updated weights have been posted. Their ration is high in forage for proper growth and development. You won't see any huge ADG numbers, but you also won't see your bull melt away during breeding season. These two red angus and 3 black angus bulls are for sale anytime and can be viewed here at the farm.
The Haughton Ranch auctioned off one of its angus steers in the lobby of the Kamloops Plaza to promote its beef which will be featured in the hotel for the month of February. Read the article here.
I stated in a previous post that I would take some pictures of the year's arrivals. It was a beautiful sunny day here and the calves were feeling good so standing for a picture was a low priority for them but I managed to snap a few. The first four are eye candy calves and the next two are purebreds by SVR Gangster who sired the Grand Champion bull at 2011 National Western in Denver.
The first calf has arrived from our new herdsire HF Torque 171W. A 94 lb bull calf out of a second calver arrived yesaterday. we are looking forward to many more from this bull who stood 3rd in class at the World Angus Form in 2009.
Thanks to Glenn Campbell of Graham's Road and Davidson Fall of Crapaud for renting Torque this winter.

My Cousin Greg's wife Stacey MacKean Hardy had her kids up for a visit to see the cows the other day as they were going through "cow withdrawal". She snapped some pictures as they were looking and I wanted to share her photography skills.
The comments in this catalogue are certainly unique. They make for a good read. I would say marketing genius as most people would be waiting by their mailbox for next year's! For those of you who are not involved in the cattle business, this is a cattle sale catalogue and the owner uses uncommon and "colorful" words to describe them.
Calving is progressing at a snails pace. We only have 11 calves so far. I don't know what everyone else is finding but here this year the cows are going 6-10 days over with heavy birthweights (all unassisted). Usually this means more bull calves but we are heavy on heifers. To date we have 6 eye candy calves with 4 heifers and 2 bulls. There are 4 purebred angus calves with 2 of each. It has been hard to get pictures but I will post some when I get them.

I just came back from checking the cows. I usually do it at 10:00 pm but tonight I went at 9:00, well one had just calved and she had the afterbirth off the hind end but not the front, I didn't see any breathing so i jumped the gate and tore the membrane off the head and low and behold there was a big shiny eye staring at me and a tounge sticking out and wiggling! The cow didn't want me there so i jumped back out and when I looked back he had his head in the air. Its amazing how things work o... Continue reading ...

The bulls we have on test here at the farm were weighed today and the new weights posted on the "bulls for sale" page. This pen is being fed a high forage/low grain ration for moderate gains and building muscle not depositing fat.
Check out our listing on the Canadian Angus Marketplace. This is a database set up by the Canadian Angus Association for easy searching of the membership with detailed information on each operation.
We wish all the best to all our friends and customers past and the new ones we will meet in 2011.
Calving season is upon us and we have two new arrivals so far. One purebred, a 70 lb Gangster bull calf and pictured above, the first ever Eye Candy (crossbred club calf bull) calf to be born on PEI. She is a hefty 103 lb unassisted heifer out of a purebred cow. 56 more to go and they should start coming fast now.

On my recent trip to Alberta I was searching for red angus genetics to add to our herd. We feel there is a market for the red cattle and will be better able to serve our customers with this wider selection.

We are half done the soybeans for this year and the yields have been impressive. Our best yields have been 1.5 and 1.7 tonnes/ac. The average for this part of the country is 1-1.1 tonnes/ac.
Here are some cool pictures of Angus cattle being loaded on a plane for shipment to Russia. I have never seen this before and found it pretty interesting.
We were sorry to hear this week that Thomas, the eight year old son of Kirk (Canadian Angus Association President) and Jill Wildman of Towaw Red Angus has been diagnosed with leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy. Best wishes and all the best to the Wildman family from the Dixon's.

It has been a busy month here. We have been catching up on odd jobs and repairs the last couple of weeks as well as training calves. I can never remember having the oats combined in August and the straw done the 2nd day of September. Usually we are struggling to get finished by the third week of September. The weather has been fantastic, almost to good as this week has been incredibly hot with humidex's up to 40 C. I know that other parts of the country are knee deep in water but we might be joining them this weekend as Hurricane Earl is on his way.

You know fall is just around the corner when we start to wean calves to get them ready for the fall shows. Five calves made the cut and after a few days to adjust the training will begin.
Another sign of changing seasons is harvest time. We combined our organic spelt yesterday and are quite happy with the yield. This crop was not underseeded but the clover is unreal! Soybeans are planned to be put in this field so at least it will be a nice plowdown.
As usual trying to do dry hay here is torture like no other! Very rarely do you seem to get three good days in a row. We have managed to get it down to just 15 acres remaining so all in all not too bad. The summer has been warm and we have had rather cool summers for the last couple of years so we won't complain. The soybeans have really taken off and so has the price. The navy beans are cultivated and are close to filling in the rows.
The show season has started (at least for some people) We ... Continue reading ...

The following week we were pleased to have visitors from Alberta tour our herd before they took in the Canadian Angus Assoc annual meetings in Halifax. Hats off to Betty-Lou Scott for organizing a great conference.
You should never complain about the weather. We were actually very dry for the first time in years and now we are getting an inch a day it seems for the last week. Only have a half day of planting left so this is a real nuisance. Spraying and cultivating is at a standstill.

I took a little road trip earlier this week. I delivered organic spelt and milling wheat to the Speerville Flour Mill just outside of Woodstock, NB. HF Torque 171W arrived on PEI yesterday. There were about 15 on the truck that started in Alberta with pickups in Sask and Ont. along the way. We are very pleased with Torque. He is square hipped, strong topped, long spined and walks extremely well. Pictures will follow soon.
I delivered our navy beans to Maurice Girouard of St. Paul, NB a couple of weeks ago. It has been a learning experience over the last couple of years as growing these white beans organically has been a challenge. Keeping the beans from staining during harvest and battling molds and mildew due to our wet summers has been a full time job! Finally we are seeing a final product. Thanks Maurice.
Our new herdsire, HF Torque 171W arrives on Friday, will post pics when he is rested up.
